FLORENCE — A man police said stole a woman’s purse and then dragged her with a car is in jail, authorities said.

Xavier Cole, 24, 323 S. O’Neal St., Florence, is charged with first-degree robbery and breaking and entering a motor vehicle, police said.

Florence police detective Justin Wright said Cole was arrested this morning by patrol officers.

“We had been looking for him for the last couple of weeks,” Wright said.

The theft happened about 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 14 in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

The victim, a 46-year-old woman, reported to authorities that a man wearing a yellow shirt grabbed her purse while she was trying to put it in the trunk of her car. She ran after the man, Wright said, and was dragged by his car several feet.

The woman was not seriously injured.

Cole is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center on bail of $2,500.
