Mayor: Offer made to buy country club property for campus

TheTimes Daily

FLORENCE — Florence Mayor Mickey Haddock confirmed today that a Chinese businessman wants to purchase the entire Florence Country Club property from the city to use as a campus for a partnership with UNA.

Zhang Zhiting, chairman of the Shenqi Ethnic Medicine College in Guizhou Province in Chinam, offered through a letter to purchase the more than 155 acres for $2.1 million. The property would be used to develop a campus to house a partnership program between Zhang and the University of North Alabama in integrative health.

The university received approval for the graduate-level program in fall 2012 and is expected to begin enrolling a small number of students in fall 2013.

Haddock said City Council will discuss the proposed purchase at its Jan. 8 meeting.
