TUSCUMBIA — Songwriters Spooner Oldham and Dan Penn, and soul legend Candi Staton — all with ties to the Shoals — are among the 2013 inductees into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.
The induction banquet is tentatively scheduled for September in Birmingham.
Oldham and Penn are being inducted individually in the Music Creator category.
“Dan and Spooner have both been overlooked for a long time,” said hall of fame board Chairman Rodney Hall. “Most people think they’re already in.”
Oldham still lives in the Shoals, while Penn and Staton are linked to Muscle Shoals music through their work.
Soul singer Staton was inducted in the Performing Arts category along with the late country artist Hank Locklin.
Country radio broadcaster Charlie Monk was inducted in the Entertainment Industry category and the late jazz legend Sun Ra was the recipient of the John Herbert Orr Pioneer Award.
The hall of fame board also accepted a $250,000 loan from a local anonymous donor.
The money will be used to pay off debts and for operational costs.
