LEIGHTON — A Lauderdale County woman was killed and a Colbert County man was flown to Huntsville Hospital after they were struck by a truck early Saturday morning in Leighton.
Stacy Neloms, 32, of Carver Heights, Florence, died at Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield.
Timothy Smith, 44, of Tuscumbia, was flown from the scene to Huntsville by Air Evac. He was in fair condition Saturday, according to hospital spokeswoman Cheryl Davis.
State troopers said Neloms and Smith were struck by a 2007 Chevrolet truck driven by Kadejia Cheatom, 18, of Leighton. Troopers said Cheatom was not injured.
The accident occurred at 1:40 a.m. on Jarmon Lane.
Emergency crews at the scene said Neloms and Smith were apparently walking on Jarmon Lane and the truck was going east. Few details of the accident were available.
According to officials at the scene, it appeared Neloms and Smith were trying to cross the road and may have stepped out in front of the truck.
Medical personnel said Neloms was taken to Helen Keller Hospital, while Smith, who was talking and alert, was flown to Huntsville.
Brick Hatton firefighters responded to the accident.
“It’s really sad when you have something like this happen,” Brick Hatton Volunteer Fire Chief Lawrence Huffman said.
“The more you see things like this happen, the more you appreciate life,” Huffman said. “And it doesn’t get any easier on us, dealing with this type of situation.
It was the second pedestrian killed in a traffic accident in the area this year.
On Jan. 3, a Colbert County man was killed in Muscle Shoals as he was trying to cross Wilson Dam Road.
