Pedestrian’s death probed

MUSCLE SHOALS — Shawn Singh said he couldn’t believe the telephone call he received Thursday night after one of his regular customers was struck by a vehicle while crossing Wilson Dam Road.

“I had just left the business and went to Florence and Jonathan had been in the store before I left,” said Singh, who works at Paradise Convenience Store at Avalon Avenue and Wilson Dam Road in Muscle Shoals. “They called and said there had been a wreck and a man had gotten hit by a car, and it was Jonathan.”

Jonathan Daniel Hamm, 31, was trying to cross Wilson Dam Road Thursday between 8:15-8:30 p.m., police said. He was flown from the scene to Huntsville Hospital where he died later Thursday night, hospital officials said.

“Jonathan was in and out of here all the time,” Singh said Friday. “I just couldn’t believe it.”

Singh said Hamm was living at Muscle Shoals Trailer Park with family members. Authorities said Hamm was apparently struck by two vehicles as he tried to cross the heavily traveled highway.

The accident happened between an ice cream business and Paradise convenience store, which is south of the traffic signal at Wilson Dam and Avalon Avenue.

Muscle Shoals police detective Capt. Lanny Coan said witnesses told authorities Hamm was apparently hit by a vehicle and was on the ground when the other car ran into him.

Emergency personnel at the scene, said Hamm was laying in the inside northbound lane of Wilson Dam Road.

Police said Hamm was struck by a 2001 Toyota Sequoia, which was traveling north. Reports indicate the driver of the vehicle, Philip Jhin, of Muscle Shoals, was not injured.

Muscle Shoals detective Craig Rickman said police are asking anyone who was traveling along Wilson Dam Road between 8:15-8:30 p.m. Thursday and may have seen the accident to call police at 256-383-6746.

“Anytime you have a loss of life, it’s a tragic situation,” Muscle Shoals Police Chief Robert Evans said. “And this is just a tragic accident.”

Singh said Hamm was a good customer and seemed to be a good guy.

“It just shows, you just don’t know what’s going to happen. I couldn’t believe it. He was just here and then that,” Singh said.

Colbert County Coroner Carlton Utley said he transferred Hamm’s body from Huntsville Hospital to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for an autopsy.

The accident remains under investigation by the Muscle Shoals Police Department.
