Mikey Bailey’s runner in the lane in the closing seconds proved to be the game-winner as Muscle Shoals won 43-41 at Hartselle on Tuesday night in boys high school basketball.
Bailey’s basket was one of only two recorded by the Trojans (18-8) in the fourth
quarter.
Ryan Johnson scored a game-high 24 points for Muscle Shoals, which trailed 12-4 after the first quarter but outscored the Tigers 35-19 in the second and third quarters to take the lead.
After Bailey, who finished with seven points, scored to snap the tie, Hartselle called timeout but then turned the ball over on a five-second violation.
Aaron Wooley led Hartselle with 17 points.
n Phil Campbell 67, Shoals Christian 56: Colton Vickery scored 16 of his game-high 30 points in the fourth quarter as Phil Campbell pulled away late from Shoals Christian.
Phil Campbell (16-10) overcame an early deficit and then outscored the Flame 21-11 in the fourth quarter.
Skeeter benford added 15 points and Ben Stancil scored 12 for the Bobcats.
Devan Traglia scored 23 points and Will Bishop added 14 for Shoals Christian.
n Florence 60, Athens 52: Florence took control in the second quarter on the way to a win at Athens.
The Falcons trailed 17-10 after one quarter before outscoring the Golden Eagles 17-8 in the second. Chaunce Watkins scored nine points in the second quarter to help the Falcons take a 27-25 lead into halftime. Florence extended its lead to 45-39 after three quarters and held on for the win.
Watkins finished with 24 points to lead Florence (20-7). Beniquez Brown chipped in with 19 points and Kivon Coman scored 14 for the Falcons. Nathaniel Potts paced Athens with 24 points.
n Rogers 72, Ardmore 52: Rogers used a huge third quarter to break open a tight game on the way to a victory over Ardmore.
The Pirates led 30-28 at halftime before outscoring Ardmore 26-10 in the third quarter. Garrett Green hit three treys and scored 11 points in the quarter, and Tyler Grigsby added a 3-pointer as the Pirates took a 56-38 lead into the final quarter.
Josh Burchell led the Pirates (11-10) with 18 points, followed by Green with 17, Grigsby with 12 and Alex Marks with 10. Jack Blair scored 17 points for Ardmore.
n Perry County 50, Wayne County 35: Jacob Tucker scored 20 points to spark Perry County past Wayne County.
Tucker, an all-state quarterback, earlier in the day announced that he would sign to play football at North Alabama.
Peyton Mathis and Austin Rice led Wayne County (9-13, 4-5 district) with 12 points each.
n West Limestone 44, Lauderdale County 42: Lauderdale County mounted a comeback bid, making four fourth-quarter 3s, but a game-winning fifth attempt missed at the buzzer.
Drew Newton led the Tigers with 13 points and had two fourth-quarter 3s. Jake Newton sank the other two, as Laudedale County (11-12) tried to rally from a 36-25 third-quarter deficit.
Jakob Liles added 12 points for the Tigers.
Preston Herring’s 13 points led West Limestone (18-8).
n Collinwood 90, Frank Hughes 61: Logan Montgomery’s 15 points led six Collinwood scorers in double digits.
Peyton Risner (14), Conner Martin (13), Hunter Andrews (11), Wesley Pigg (10) and Ethan Butler (10) also reached double figures for the Trojans (14-9, 6-4 district).
Collinwood scored 20 points in every quarter but the fourth and led 71-42 after three quarters.
Antwon Churchwell led all scorers with 28 for Frank Hughes, and Matt Lineberry added 19.
n Belgreen 73, Addison 45: Belgreen held Addison to 12 first-half points and poured in 48 in the second half of an easy win.
Chase Landers scored a game-high 21 points for the Bulldogs (23-2). Tyler Medina added 13 and Chaney Simmons 12.
Adam Clark and Jesse Seales had eight points each to lead Addison.
n Brooks 54, Lexington 43: Holden Corum scored 13 points and Skyler Beck added 11 to lead Brooks to a road win.
Zack Rogers led all scorers with 17 for Lexington (13-11), and Logan Thompson had 14.
n Vina 53, Covenant Christian 47: Nicky Miller and Adam Pharr each scored 20 points and Vina outlasted the Eagles to pick up the road win.
The Red Devils led 39-27 after three quarters and Vina fought off a late rally to close out Covenant Christian.
Preston Templeman led the Eagles with 16 points and Michael Lossau added 12.
n Tharptown 50, Colbert Heights 49: Riley Nolen and Kent Allen each scored 15 points as Tharptown came from behind to edge Colbert Heights.
Tharptown trailed by 2 points through three quarters and outscored Colbert Heights 13-10 in the fourth quarter to steal the win.
Kaleb Suggs led the way for Colbert Heights (14-11) with 13 points, while heath Olive added 12 and Bryson Smith 11.
n Sheffield 58, Clements 50: The Bulldogs trailed by as many as 11 points but outscored Clements 36-17 in the second half to complete the comeback.
D.J. Sanders scored a game-high 21 points for Sheffield (16-6), while Jerwan Thompson added 13 and Simon Ridgeway 10.
Devante Williams netted 19 points for Clements and Lamac Hicks chipped in
with 13.
n Mars Hill 71, Wilson 53 Four players scored in double figures as Mars Hill (21-6) went on the road to beat Wilson.
The Panthers trailed by 5 points after the first quarter, before outscoring the Warriors 24-5 in the second quarter to pull away.
Landon Willis and Griffin Hibbett each scored 12 points, while Thomas Swinea added 11 and Mark McWilliams 10.
Pate Wear led Wilson with 15 points and Cameron Thorn added 11.
n Waterloo 60, Cherokee 52: The Cougars held Cherokee to 15 points in the first half and made key shots late to lock up the win.
Dylan Guthrie led the way for Waterloo with 15 points. Wayne Darby added 14 and Taylor Whipple and Ronnie Hollis each had 12.
Jake Roberson led Cherokee with 13 points.
n Deshler 54, Russellville 50 OT: Brandon Creasy knocked down a 3-pointer with 4 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime and Deshler (11-15) made free throws in the waning moments to down Russellville.
Deshler held a 10-8 advantage after the opening quarter, before Russellville came back to take a 21-18 advantage into the break. Deshler outscored the Golden Tigers 22-19 in the second half and 14-10 in overtime to win in a thriller.
JuJu Donley led Deshler with 16 points. Recard Carter scored 8 of his 11 total points in overtime and D.J. Bailey chipped in with 11.
Will Bostick scored a game-high 26 points and J.T. Watkins tallied 12 for Russellville.
Girls
n Phil Campbell 54, Shoals Christian 38: Ciara Harville scored 25 points and Phil Campbell pulled away with an 18-8 run in the third quarter against Shoals Christian.
Whitley Yocom finished with 10 points for the Bobcats (14-11). Lacy Lindley and Kyra Agnew topped Shoals Christian with 11 points apiece.
n Waterloo 38, Cherokee 33: Baylee Atkinson scored 13 of her team-high 15 points in the second half to spark Waterloo to a road win against Cherokee.
The Cougars trailed 14-10 at halftime and 23-21 after three quarters.
Waterloo was able to grab the lead early in the fourth quarter and hold on for the victory.
Bradi Morris added 11 points for Waterloo (8-14). Briana Goodloe scored 16 points and Olivia Taylor added 12 for Cherokee.
n Wayne County 67, Perry County 33: Wayne County held Perry County scoreless in the first quarter, opening a 17-0 lead en route to an easy win.
Kelsey Risner hit five 3-pointers to finish with 26 points and also had 13 rebounds to lead Wayne County (13-9, 5-4). Haley Inman added 11 points for the Wildcats.
n Covenant Christian 53, Vina 34: Despite managing one basket in the third quarter, Covenant made 18 of 19 free throws in the period, turning a 28-16 halftime lead into a 48-27 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Anna Claire Noblit led all scorers with 23 points for Covenant, and Elizabeth Mitchell had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Miranda Howard’s 11 points led Vina.
n Lauderdale County 69, West Limestone 50: Chatara Cox scored eight of her game-high 17 points in the first quarter and Grace Newton sank two 3-pointers in the period, as Lauderdale County jumped out to a 17-4 lead in an easy win.
Makayla Liles finished with 11 points for the Tigers (23-4).
Laura Easter led West Limestone with 10 points.
n Collinwood 46, Frank Hughes 27: Collinwood used a 15-4 third-quarter run to break open a 16-all halftime tie.
Alexis Haddock scored a team-high 12 points for the Trojans (16-7, 6-4 district).
Macey Strickland had 12 points to lead Frank Hughes, which totaled 11 second-half points.
n Lexington 53, Brooks 50: Lexington trailed by one with 32 seconds to play before sinking four straight free throws to close out the win in a back-and-forth game.
Haven Albright scored a game-high 21 points for Lexington. Sydney Corum added 13 and Savannah Stults 10.
Brooks made eight 3-pointers, including five in the first half while staking a 30-28 halftime lead.
Deanna Thompson led the Lions with 15 points, while Kris Luking and Erin Jewell had 11 each.
n Russellville 50, Deshler 31: Four players scored in double figures as Class 5A, No. 7 Russellville downed Deshler.
Russellville (17-5) opened on a 10-3 run to take early control against the Tigers.
Freshman Amber Elliott led the way for the Golden Tigers with 17 points and seven blocks, while Ashley Dunston netted 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Taylor Smith added 12 points and Ayanna McCullough scored 11 and tallied seven steals.
Ra’jene Swopes led Deshler (12-11) with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
n Rogers 54, Ardmore 46: Freshman Lindsey Hamner scored 10 of her game-high 23 points in the first quarter as Rogers (12-13) secured the home win against Ardmore.
The Pirates built a 7-point advantage by halftime and outscored Ardmore in every quarter to seal the victory.
Haley Covington led Ardmore (3-13) with 13 points and Sarah Wales added 11 for Ardmore.
n Hartselle 55, Muscle Shoals 22: Freshman Riley Terry scored 16 points as Hartselle upended Muscle Shoals.
Hartselle held a 26-13 lead at the midway point and held the Trojans to nine points in the second half.
Quanesha Burks added 12 points for the Tigers.
Brianna Hillman led Muscle Shoals (7-17) with seven points.
n Addison 64, Belgreen 63: Lauren Cutcher scored on a put back as time expired to deny Belgreen’s upset bid.
A back-and-forth game saw the lead change hands many times. Addison carried a two-point advantage into the final quarter before Belgreen grabbed the lead down the stretch. Cutcher’s offensive rebound and score under the basket sealed it.
Cutcher finished with 20 points for Addison (15-7) to lead all scorers. Lauren Lowery added 17 and Heather Baldwin 12.
Laken Bragwell scored 10 of her 18 points in the final quarter to lead Belgreen (9-14).
Erica Smith tallied 16 points and Bridgette Thompson 15.
n Wilson 54, Mars Hill 46: Harlie Barkley scored 15 points and Ciarra Edwards added 14 as Wilson topped Mars Hill.
Brittany Gooch scored 11 points for the Warriors (12-14).
Morgan Leavitt scored 10 points for Mars Hill.
