The 2012 TimesDaily Classic baseball tournament got under way Monday with nine games at two different sites.
Russellville and Homewood split two games at Russellville, while Hamilton beat Red Bay 4-0 and Phil Campbell blanked Hamilton 2-0.
At Deshler, two-time defending Class 1A state champion Shoals Christian opened the season with a pair of tough losses. Hatton defeated the Flame 4-2 in the first game and Sheffield edged Shoals Christian 6-5. Lawrence County blanked Sheffield 8-0 and Deshler won its first game, beating Hatton 7-1.
Action continues today with two games at each site, beginning at 4 p.m. The tournament continues through next week with the championship game on March 3.
n Russellville 5, Homewood 4: Russellville scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to rally past Homewood.
J.T. Watkins earned the win in relief for Russellville. Austin Kitterman started for the Golden Tigers and pitched into the fourth inning.
Watkins also had two hits to lead Russellville.
n Homewood 8, Russellville 0: Jackson Smith and Watkins had the only hits for Russellville as Homewood blanked the Golden Tigers. Cody Greenhill took the loss for Russellville.
n Hamilton 4, Red Bay 0: Jordan Humphries threw five scoreless innings as Hamilton shut out Red Bay.
Matthew Real had two hits and three RBIs for the Aggies. Colton Brown added two hits for Hamilton.
Austin Malone recorded seven strikeouts in pitching 4 1/3 innings for Red Bay. Bradley Patterson had two hits, including a double for Red Bay.
n Phil Campbell 2, Hamilton 0: Craig Saint hit a two-run double in the fifth inning to lift Phil Campbell past Hamilton.
Saint’s double was the only bit of help Bobcats pitcher Trevor Farley needed, as he pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits.
Saint finished 2-for-3 while Austin Jones and Jamie Dorroh were also 2-for-3, with Jones hitting a double.
n Hatton 4, Shoals Christian 2: Hatton scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the sixth to win its season opener.
Reed Gillespie had a bases-loaded double that drove in two runs and gave Hatton the lead in the sixth. Colby Harville drove in the final run on a fielder’s choice.
Tyler Gooch pitched three hitless innings in relief to earn the win for the Hornets. Devan Traglia led the Flame with two hits and Will Bishop added a run-scoring single.
n Sheffield 6, Shoals Christian 5: Drake Beavers doubled home Austin Tippett with the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth and Sheffield held on to beat Shoals Christian.
Tippett had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Bulldogs. Beavers and Austin Evans also had two hits each for Sheffield. Cory McLeary had two hits for the Flame.
Davey Smitherman allowed two hits and one earned run in four innings to earn the win. Evans worked the final inning to get the save.
Sheffield lost its second game as the Bulldogs were no-hit in an 8-0 loss to Lawrence County.
n Deshler 7, Hatton 1: Jesse Sockwell allowed four hits and struck out two over five innings in earning the win as Deshler beat Hatton.
Tucker Norwood led the Tigers with two hits. Austin Long had two hits and Tyler Latham added a double for Hatton.
Other Baseball
Brooks 11, Rogers 1: Tanner Graham allowed just one hit in four innings and recorded six strikeouts to earn the win as Brooks defeated Rogers in six innings at the Lauderdale County tournament.
Austin Michael led the Lions with three hits. Austin Broadfoot had a triple and a double for the Lions, while Mason Castile and Devan Henson also had two hits each. Josh Burchell had a run-scoring double for Rogers.
Central 12-20, Wilson 5-6: Andrew Mace had two hits and five RBIs to spark Central to a 20-6 victory in the second game of a doubleheader against Wilson.
Kolby Hanback led the Wildcats with three hits. Daniel Hayes had two hits and two RBIs and Drew Brown also had two hits for Central.
Peyton Stracener allowed three hits and struck out eight in 4 2/3 innings to get the win.
In the first game, Caleb McDonald allowed two hits and struck out six in pitching four innings to earn the win in a 12-5 Central victory.
Murphy Harrison led the Wildcats with three hits. Justin Pennington added two hits and three RBIs and Cole Michael had two this and two RBIs. Austen Oakley had a run-scoring double for Wilson and Adam Barkley had two hits.
Sparkman 11-8, Muscle Shoals 3-15: Ryan Ware had five hits on the day to help Muscle Shoals split a season-opening doubleheader at Sparkman.
Houston Looser had three hits and Ware added two hits as the Trojans lost the opener 11-3. Seth Woods took the loss for Muscle Shoals.
In the second game, Muscle Shoals scored seven runs in the first inning and held off a Sparkman rally for a 15-8 victory.
Ware had three hits, including a run-scoring double for the Trojans. Colby Honey added a two-run double and finished with two hits and three RBIs. Tyler Oliver added two hits and two RBIs and Lane Welborn had two hits, including a RBI-double.
Nick Arndt eared the win and Blake Logan pitched 3 1/3 hitless innings to get the save.
n Austin 6, Florence 5 (10 innings): Florence starter Kyle Girsch pitched six scoreless innings, allowing only a first-inning double, but the bullpen couldn’t close out the seventh with a 5-0 lead in the Falcons season-opener at the Athens-East Limestone tournament.
Austin sent the game into extra innings scoring five runs in its last at-bat, which included two wild pitches and an error by Florence. The Black Bears scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning.
Kelly Coleman had two hits, and Will Lovelace drove in two runs for Florence (0-1), which continues tournament play today against Muscle Shoals.
n Tharptown 11, Cherokee 7: Tharptown got a victory over Cherokee in its opening game of the season, thanks to the hitting of William Washington.
Washington was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored for the Wildcats in the victory.
Kelby Hallmark was the winning pitcher, striking out three batters in the victory.
Golf
Russellville opens with win: Russellville opened its season with an impressive victory in a five-team, 18-hole match at Twin Pines.
The Golden Tigers finished at 309, while Shoals Christian was second at 313. Halevyille (359), Lawrence County (359), Deshler (397) and Russellville Gold (405) rounded out the field.
Russellville’s Will Bragwell took medalist honors with a 72. Eli Hodges added a 73 and Hagen Price shot 78 for the Golden Tigers.
Ben Wood shot 74 and John Michael Russell shot 77 for Shoals Christian. Jesse Childress shot a 77 for Lawrence County; Lee Lan shot 77 for Haleyville and Jacob Devaney led Deshler with an 84.
Brooks 170, Central 175: Jordan Smith shot a 39 to lead Brooks past Central in a match played at Blackberry Trail.
Alex Moody and Zade Wood each shot 43 for Brooks. Austin Gean and Tyler Rhodes each shot 40 to lead Central.
In girls individual play, Shoals Christian’s Kaitlyn Gilmore took medalist honors with a 40.
Rachel May shot 42 and Haley Crosby 47 for Central. Anna Fassnacht and Tori Smith each shot 43 for Brooks.
Girls Basketball
n Wayne County wins district consolation game: Kelsey Risner scored a game-high 23 points and made 12 of 13 free throws to lead Wayne County to a win in the consolation game of the TSSAA Class A, District 12 tournament.
The Wildcats (18-10) will play on the road Friday night in an elimination game against the District 11 runner-up.
Ashley Johns scored a team-high nine points for Loretto, which sank three 3s in the third quarter and one in the fourth to keep within single digits.
n Collinwood falls in district tourney final: Collinwood couldn’t stop Claire Franklin, who sank four 3s and scored 28 points, including nine in the second-quarter as Summertown opened up a 12-point lead.
Ashely Farmer scored a team-high 11 points for Collinwood, which will still host an elimination game Friday as the playoffs continue.
