Prep roundup: Watkins paces Florence past Colbert County

Chaunce Watkins scored a season-high 34 points to power Florence to a 76-50 victory over Colbert County in boys high school basketball action Monday night.

The Indians kept it close in the first half and trailed 40-32 at halftime. Florence outscored Colbert County 21-10 in the third quarter to push its lead to 61-42.

Beniquez Brown added 15 points for the Falcons (20-7).

Jonah Casteel led Colbert County with 18 points.

n Red Bay 60, Hamilton 59: Michael Ramirez hit two free throws with 4.9 seconds remaining to give Red Bay a come-from-behind victory over Hamilton.

The Tigers trailed by eight with just over two minutes remaining when Austin Malone went to work. Malone hit three consecutive 3-pointers to get pull Red Bay within one in the final minute. Hamilton missed two free throws with 17 seconds left and Ramirez was then fouled driving to the basket. The Aggies were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer after Ramirez made the two free throws.

The Aggies made just 1 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Ramirez led Red Bay (13-15) with 18, followed by Malone with 16 and Cole Rooker with 11. Bud Coleman paced Hamilton with 18 points.

n Lauderdale County 69, Clements 44: Three players scored in double figures for Lauderdale County as the Tigers pounded Clements.

Logan Cole led the Tigers (13-13) with 19 points. Drew Newton scored 15 points for LCHS, while freshman Nathaniel McCaffery scored eight points in the fourth quarter to finish with 10.

Devonte Williams paced Clements with 10 points.

n Wilson 49, Lawrence County 35: Wilson used a big second half to earn a victory at Lawrence County.

The Warriors trailed 21-17 at halftime before rallying for the win.

Kenneth Henry led Wilson with 12 points, followed by Jarrod Mask with 11 and Nick Boudin with 10. Gabe Vernon scored 12 points to lead Lawrence County.

n Muscle Shoals 63, Central 48: Ryan Johnson scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the second and third quarters as Muscle Shoals snapped a two-game losing streak.

The Trojans trailed 17-15 after the first quarter, but outscored Sheffield 39-19 in the middle two quarters to seize control.

Debo Reeder scored 12 points for Muscle Shoals (19-10).

No player reached double figures for Sheffield (17-7).

Girls

n Lauderdale County 70, Clements 49: Lauderdale County outscored Clements in all four quarters as the Tigers cruised past the Colts.

LCHS (25-5) used its pressure defense to build a 35-26 halftime lead and began to pull away in the second half. Clements trimmed the margin to 10 late in the third quarter before the Tigers went on a run to extend their lead to 53-36 entering the final

quarter.

Chatara Cox scored 17 points to lead LCHS. Emma Wallen added 13 and Ivy Wallen 10 for the Tigers. Levata Swope scored 14 and Daneshia Malone 13 for the Colts.

n Red Bay 66, Hamilton 34: Red Bay took control in the second quarter, outscoring Hamilton 26-10 en route to an easy victory over the visiting Aggies.

Hannah Sharp was the top scorer for Red Bay (25-4) with 13 points.

n Decatur Heritage 53, Waterloo 29: Waterloo saw its season come to an end with a loss to Decatur Heritage in the Class 1A, Area 16 tournament at R.A. Hubbard.

The Eagles took control early and took a 27-15 lead into halftime. Waterloo was unable to rally in the second half as the Eagles advanced to face Hubbard in a semifinal game Thursday.

Brittany Young led Waterloo (8-16) with 13 points. Peyton Barthel scored 16 points for Decatur Heritage.

n Florence 63, Colbert County 42: Jerrisa Green scored 20 points in three quarters and Florence built a big early lead to beat Colbert County.

Emily Towery added 13 points for the Falcons (13-12), who assured themselves of at least a .500 season with the win. Florence travels to Bob Jones on Thursday for the Class 6A, Area 15 tournament. The Falcons play Austin in the opening round.

Liz Noceda scored 26 points for Colbert County.

n Lawrence County 45, Wilson 28: Lawrence County opened a 23-8 halftime lead and held off Wilson the rest of the way.

Adrien Coffey scored 12 points for the Red Devils (21-8), while Tori McDaniel

added 11.

Ciarra Edward paced Wilson with 12 points.

n Vina 46, Phillips 42: Vina kept its season alive with a victory in the opening round of the Class 1A, Area 13 tournament at Tharptown.

The Red Devils used an 18-10 burst to open a 36-20 lead after three quarters, and then held on as Phillips rallied in the fourth quarter.

The Bears got as close as three points before Vina sealed the victory.

Morgan Humphres scored a game-high 15 points for Vina, which will play Tharptown on Thursday night. Andrea Parrish added 12 points in the victory.

Savannah Hood paced Phillips, which had is season end with 11 points.
