RUSSELLVILLE - A 13-year employee of the Franklin County School System was placed on paid leave Monday after she was arrested for drug-related charges, including supplying drugs to a minor, authorities said.

Shelana Luck, 36, 2578 Nix Road, Phil Campbell, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, first-degree possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and furnishing a controlled substance to a minor, which in this case was her 16-year-old son, Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver said.

Courthouse officials said furnishing a controlled substance to a minor is a Class A felony and is punishable by 10 years to life in prison, if convicted.

Her son, a junior at Phil Campbell, is charged with first-degree possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of a controlled substance (morphine pills) and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, Oliver said.

The arrests came after a three-week investigation into the possibility of illegal drug activity at Luck’s Nix Road residence, the sheriff said.

Investigators said undercover agents purchased marijuana from the juvenile on two occasions at the residence.

Oliver said the arrests were made Friday afternoon after deputies executed a search warrant at the residence and confiscated marijuana, pills and drug paraphernalia.

“We have not found anywhere in our investigation where they were involved in any illegal drug activity at the school,” Oliver said.

Franklin County School Superintendent Gary Williams said Luck was notified Monday of her suspension. He said she will remain on suspension with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

Luck, according to school officials, has been an employee of the school system since August 1998, working as the school secretary and as the bookkeeper for the past two years.

Williams said no disciplinary action has been taken against the student.

“We’ll consult with the school board attorney on this since nothing took place on school grounds,” Williams said.

Investigators said after being taken into custody, Luck and the boy admitted to smoking marijuana together and to providing marijuana for each other.

The boy is being held in the Tennessee Valley Juvenile Detention Center in Tuscumbia, while Luck is out of jail on bail of $4,500.
