SPEAKE — Fire broke out about 10:30 this morning at the old Speake High School.
A witness said members of the Speake Volunteer Fire Department contained the blaze to one end of the building near the library and extinguished the fire shortly after 11 a.m.
A dispatcher for the Lawrence County Emergency Management Agency said firefighters were dispatched to the old school at 10:24 a.m. and were still on the scene at noon.
The building had been locked. There were no students in the area at the time of the fire and no one was injured.
Speake School, which goes from kindergarten through eighth-grade, is nearby.
