HANCEVILLE — After managing nine points in the first half, Sheffield shook its jitters and rallied to force overtime at the Northwest Regional Class 3A boys high school basketball tournament this morning.
The Bulldogs (20-8) couldn’t complete the comeback, though, suffering some late breakdowns and missing two go-ahead shots in the extra period of a 46-43 season-ending loss to Carbon Hill (25-7).
Trailing 23-9 at halftime, Sheffield went to a box-and-one defense in the third quarter in an effort to stop leading scorer Tylor Owens and held Carbon Hill to one basket over a 7-minute, 30-second span.
Meanwhile, Sheffield mounted a 20-4 run, getting out in transition for fast-break baskets when it wasn’t feeding forward Jerwan Thompson, who sat on the bench with two fouls for 9:57 during the first half.
Hunter Danley scored 11 of his team-high 16 points during the run, including two layups off long outlet passes.
Thompson, who finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds, sank two free throws to tie it for the first time at 29 with 6:26 left in regulation. His put-back with 3:21 remaining gave Sheffield its first lead, 33-32.
Carbon Hill came back to lead by four before Eric Yarborough’s 3-pointer from the right wing made it 38-37 with 32 seconds left.
Jametrious Smith then sank 1 of 2 free throws to tie it. Thompson was fouled while rebounding the second but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity.
Carbon Hill did the same at the other end and couldn’t get off a shot in the last 9 seconds to force overtime, tied at 38.
Sheffield went 2-of-10 from the field in overtime. Thompson sank both of them and his put-back with 59 seconds to play cut the deficit to 42-41.
Carbon Hill kept Sheffield in it, missing the front end of two 1-and-1 free-throw opportunities in the final 1:29, but the Bulldogs couldn’t finish on two point-blank, go-ahead shots.
Carbon Hill sank its last four free throws to seal the win. Thompson made a shot at the buzzer for the final margin.
Owens led all scorers with 18 points, while Gerald Smith added nine, all in the first half, for Carbon Hill.
Sheffield shot 10-of-19 from the field during its second-half comeback after making 4 of 21 first-half shots.
