Shoals Sav-A-Life fundraiser slated for Oct 25
Staff reports

FLORENCE — Tickets are still available for the Shoals Sav-A-Life-sponsored event Oct. 25, featuring Todd Burpo, the author of “Heaven is for Real.”

Todd and Sonja Burpo, of Nebraska, will speak at 7 p.m. at Christ Chapel. General admission tickets are $15 while VIP tickets are $100 and include your choice of two reception times with the Burpo’s at 5 p.m. or 5:45 p.m. as well as reserved seating for the main event.

“Heaven is for Real” is the account of Colton Burpo, who at 4 years old described going to heaven and meeting Jesus and some of his own family members including a sister whom he didn’t know about. His mother had miscarried the baby two years before he was born.

Colton “died” while in surgery for a ruptured appendix but doctors brought him back to life. Colton would later tell his parents he had visited heaven, met Jesus and other family members and that Jesus sent him back to his life on Earth.

That story, as told to his father, Todd, became a best-seller on the New York Times list for 65 weeks. Sony Pictures is also releasing a movie based on the story in 2014.

Beth Grisham, executive director of Shoals Sav-A-Life, said the Burpo’s story will appeal to everyone, whether Christian or not. She said after she read the book, it became clear to her that Colton’s message of Jesus’s love for children, very much coincided with her organization’s mission, to counsel with women contemplating or who have had an abortion.

“We expect a diverse audience because this book has sold across all secular lines,” Grisham said. “We wanted to reach across those lines because we know there are those who are undecided as to whether heaven is real or not.”
