LEIGHTON ‑ The Colbert County-Brooks high school football game Friday will feature an additional treat: a pregame musical performance from members of the legendary Swampers.
Jimmy Johnson, Spooner Oldham and David Hood will perform along with the Colbert County and Brooks marching bands beginning at 6:30 p.m. at C.T. Manley Field, Colbert band director Jon Wright said. They also will be named honorary members of the Colbert County marching band.
The game kicks off at 7 p.m.
Wright said the Colbert County band’s halftime show theme throughout the football season has centered around the legendary Muscle Shoals sound.
“The show has been ‘Sounds of the Shoals,’” Wright said. “We’ve played Shoals music all year, so we asked them to come out for this.”
The Swampers is the name given to a group of local musicians who performed for artists recording in the Shoals during the 1960s and 1970s. Numerous hits came from those recordings.
Their name was immortalized in the 1974 Lynyrd Skynyrd hit, “Sweet Home, Alabama,” when a line from the song stated: “Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers.”
