ATHENS — Muscle Shoals and Russellville added a another classic to their boys basketball rivalry Friday night, and this time it was the Trojans that celebrated a postseason victory.
Muscle Shoals rallied from a 13-point deficit midway through the third quarter to knock Russellville out of the playoffs with a 64-60 victory. The Trojans play Athens at 7 p.m. on Monday for the Class 5A, Area 16 crown.
Russellville’s Will Bostick, who scored 30 points, hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime tied at 56. But Muscle Shoals, which made 6 of 8 free throws in the extra period, outscored Russellville 8-4 to claim the win and secure a sub-region game next week.
Ryan Johnson scored 17 points for the Trojans (20-10), while Debo Reeder and LeDamian Stanford added 10 points.
Bostick’s 30 points, that included six 3-pointers, paced Russellville. Jacob Seal finished with 14 points.
Muscle Shoals coach Jody Lanier credited the play of reserves Jalen Triplett and Javian Ramson with sparking the comeback.
“They came in and gave us some energy,” Lanier said. “When they came in, it seemed like we woke up. We started pressing and Jalen got a couple of steals and Javian got a few rebounds.”
Bostick’s 3-pointer to end the third quarter gave the Golden Tigers a 40-32 lead. But Muscle Shoals pulled ahead in the fourth quarter before Bostick sent the game to overtime with his buzzer-beater.
The win was not secure until Ramson hit the second of two free throws with seven seconds remaining.
Muscle Shoals made 17 of 22 free throws, including 13 of 16 in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Class 2A, Area 12
n Phil Campbell 61, Sulligent 48: Colton Vickery provided steady offense in every quarter, leading Phil Campbell to Monday’s championship game against rival Red Bay with the 13-point win.
Vickery finished with a game-high 30 points for the Bobcats (18-11). Ben Stancil added 11.
Vickery scored six points in the first and third quarters and had nine points in the second and fourth quarters. Phil Campbell opened a 28-16 halftime lead.
Ladaric Coleman led Sulligent with 13 points.
n Red Bay 62, Lamar County 37: A strong defensive effort and consistent offense led Red Bay past Lamar County and a trip to the championship game.
Lamar County scored just nine points in each of the first three quarters before scoring 10 in the fourth.
Red Bay (14-15) consistently pulled away throughout the game, leading 13-9 after one quarter, 28-18 at halftime and 45-27 after three quarters.
Cole Rooker led Red Bay with 12 points while Brett McDowell scored 10 for the Tigers. Marquez Lacy led Lamar County with nine points.
Class 1A, Area 16
n Decatur Heritage 68, Waterloo 33: Tyde Coffey scored a game-high 27 points and Jason Holland added 14 as top-seed Decatur Heritage ended Waterloo’s season.
The Eagles raced to a 33-19 halftime lead and then sealed the win by outscoring Waterloo (10-18) 22-9 in the third quarter.
Wayne Darby led Waterloo with 11 points.
n R.A. Hubbard 69, Shoals Christian 46: Four Chiefs scord in double figures on the way to an easy win against Shoals Christian.
Tevin Ray led the Chiefs (18-6) with 15 points, while Austin Beasley finished with 14. John Owens and Eddrick Harris added 11 points each.
Will Bishop and Devan Traglia scored 11 points each for the Flame, which trailed 35-23 at the half.
Class 1A, Area 13 Tournament
n Belgreen 72, Vina 38: No. 3 Belgreen jumped out to a big first-quarter lead and never looked back against Vina
Belgreen plays Phillips for the area title Monday at 7 p.m.
Belgreen led 23-8 after the first quarter and took a 41-15 lead at halftime before cruising to victory in the second half. Belgreen (25-2) had a balanced scoring effort, as five different players were in double figures, led by Dustin Smith with 13 points. Brock Hester had 12, Chase Landers had 11 and Tyler Medina and Dakota Leverett each scored 10 for the Bulldogs.
Nicky Miller had points and Adam Pharr added 11 for Vina.
n Phillips 81 Tharptown 75: Phillips broke open a tie game with a 29-point fourth quarter to win an offensive shootout over Tharptown.
The game was tied at 52 after three quarters, but Phillips outscored Tharptown 29-23 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win. The game had huge swings of momentum, as Phillips led 23-12 after one quarter before Tharptown outscored the Bears 26-10 in the second quarter to take a 38-33 halftime lead. Matt Kelley led Phillips with 25 points while Tyler Crumpton scored 23, Rodney Camp had 16 and Austin Campbell added 10.
Kent Allen led Tharptown with 25 points, Kelby Hallmark scored 21 and Nick Long added 13.
