FLORENCE - Junior Josh Cyr delivered a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the University of North Alabama baseball team to a 5-3 come-from-behind win today over Missouri Western.
Battling a one-for-22 slump over the past two weeks, Cyr delivered when it counted today as UNA fought back from a 3-1 deficit with four runs in the eigth.
Missouri Western starter Nik Jurado dominated UNA batters for seven innings, allowing just three hits. But in the eighth he gave up a leadoff single to Daniel Korpi, a sacrifice to Drew Parker and an RBI single to Darrmal Moore that made it 3-2.
The Griffons then changed pitchers on six consecutive batters as UNA ralllied for the win. After driving in Korpi, Moore stole second and went to third on a throwing error. Michael Schmidt then walked, and Josh Doyle brought home the tying run with a squeeze bunt.
Jake Sloan was hit-by-pitch and Andrew Almon walked to load the bases before Cyr then delivered a single through the left side for the go-ahead runs.
Ben Seabrook came on to earn the save for the Lions in the ninth. It was his second of the year in five appearances.
UNA starter Chad Boughner allowed two runs in a rough first inning but settled down and allowed just three runs on four hits over six and 1/3 innings. He struckout nine and walked three.
Reliever Brantley Claunch pitched one scoreless inning of relief and Jacob Westerhouse got his first win, retiring the final two batters in the top of the eighth.
UNA's pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts.
North Alabama is now 8-2 overall and plays at Auburn-Montgomery on Tuesday in the Lions first road game of the season.
