UNA’s soccer coach resigns
Staff reports
Graham Winkworth

FLORENCE - After guiding the University of North Alabama to the NCAA Division II Tournament four consecutive years, Graham Winkworth has resigned to become head women’s soccer coach at the University of South Alabama.

In 10 seasons at UNA, Winkworth had a 111-81-8 overall record and ranks as the winningest coach in the program’s history.

He led the Lions to their first NCAA Tournament appearances (2009-12) and the Gulf South Conference championship in 2011. He had a 65-18-3 mark over the past four seasons.

North Alabama went 13-6-1 this season, reaching the championship match of the Gulf South Conference Tournament and the semifinals of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament.

“I want to thank President (William) Cale and Athletic Director Mark Linder for all the opportunities they have provided me over the years and for the support that enabled the transformation of the soccer program here,” Winkworth said. “I also want to thank the staff in the department for being so supportive the last 10 years.

“Most of all I want to thank the players that I have had the opportunity to coach over the years. I have been extremely lucky to work with some wonderful young ladies who have transformed my life and I am thankful for that.”

UNA had 33 All-GSC honors in Winkworth’s 10 seasons, including five in 2012. The program also produced the first two all-Americans in UNA women’s soccer history.

Winkworth, a Reading, England, native, came to UNA after two seasons as assistant coach at the University of Central Arkansas from 2001-2003.
