FLORENCE — Workers have begun the removal of the Jackson Ford Bridge, which is better known as the Ghost Bridge, on Lauderdale 282, officials said.
Earlier this month, the Lauderdale County Commission approved a contract to have the bridge removed.
Lauderdale County Engineer Ken Allamel said based on conversations with the contractor, the work is expected to take a week to 10 days.
The bridge, according to county officials, has been closed since 1996.
“It was closed because of its condition and it has continued to deteriorate,” Commission Chairman Dewey Mitchell said.
Mitchell said the one-lane steel truss bridge is in such bad shape that it has become a liability to the county.
