Georgia authorities have opened a homicide investigation into the death of a Tuscumbia native.
Reports from the Cherokee County (Georgia) Sheriff’s office said the remains found at a residence in the 2100 block of Purcell Lane near Alpharetta, Georgia, have been identified as those of Gary W. Farris, 58, a Deshler High School graduate.
Authorities said Farris’s death has been ruled a homicide.
Police said Farris owned the property where the body was found. His body was identified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab.
Reports indicate the remains were discovered July 6 by a family member behind the house, which is north of Atlanta.
The release said the department is “confident that this is not a stranger-on-stranger crime and Mr. Farris knew the suspects.”
Farris was an attorney for the Atlanta-based law firm of Burr and Forman. Reports indicate Farris founded the firm’s Atlanta office in 1995.
Friends said Farris was a 1978 graduate of Deshler High School.
