FLORENCE — University of North Alabama Professor Michael Pretes has received the 2018 Higher Education Distinguished Teaching Award of the National Council for Geographic Education.

Pretes has taught geography at UNA for 12 years, having previously taught in Wyoming, Missouri, Hawaii, New Mexico, Canada, Finland and Australia.

He was honored for excellence in geography teaching and leadership at the post-secondary level during the annual NCGE meeting in Canada last month.

"It's also recognition of the outstanding work of the UNA Department of Geography, the UNA College of Arts and Sciences and the university overall," Pretes said.
