FLORENCE – Quick action by area volunteer firefighters stopped a car fire from catching a church on fire Sunday.

Officials said a car caught fire underneath an awning at Village Baptist Church, located at the intersection of Alabama 20 and Lauderdale 200.

According to Lauderdale 911 officials, the fire was reported at 6:56 p.m.

Firefighters at the scene said the fire was extinguished before it could get into the church building.

Officials said firefighters from Central, Cloverdale, Underwood-Petersville and Waterloo assisted Oakland Fire Department on the call.
