Alabama's first signature of the 2018 National Signing Day came from a familiar spot — Louisiana.
Three-star cornerback Eddie Smith of Slidell, La., signed with the national champion Crimson Tide during a ceremony at his high school this morning.
The signing isn't official until Alabama receives Smith's signed letter of intent and announces it.
Smith is the fourth defensive back member of the Crimson Tide's 2018 class, joining top-rated junior college corner Saivion Smith, four-star instate product Jalyn Armour-Davis of Mobile and four-star Josh Jobe of Connecticut.
Today is college football's traditional February signing day. There was an earlier signing day in December.
The cousin to current Crimson Tide sophomore receiver DeVonta Smith, who caught the game-winning touchdown in overtime of the national championship game, Eddie Smith is a player at a need position. He could find his way immediately into a rotational role within Alabama’s secondary, especially if he shows the same work ethic and approach as his cousin did this past season.
