Twenty-one local high school softball players received All-State recognition by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, and an additional 10 earned honorable mention.
Rogers’ Haley Stutts is Alabama’s Class 4A coach of the year, and Mars Hill’s Matt Burgess is Class 1A coach of the year.
In her first year in charge at Rogers, Stutts led the Pirates to a surprising state runner-up finish. Burgess, meanwhile, guided Mars Hill to its first state championship in softball.
Hatton’s Ashley Berryman was named the Class 2A pitcher of the year. Mars Hill’s Riley Vaughn was named Class 1A pitcher of the year. Berryman helped Hatton finish runner-up to G.W. Long, while Vaughn pitched most innings for the state champion Panthers.
One change to this year’s all-state voting was pooling infielders together for selection instead of separating first base, second, third and shortstop.
Rogers freshman pitcher Hannah Price, Wilson junior infielder Johnna Staggs and Wilson senior Taylor Brown made the Class 4A first team, with Brown making the list as a designated hitter.
Class 3A first-teamers include Lauderdale County junior infielder Morgan White and Colbert Heights senior Caroline Clark, who made the list as a DH.
Joining Berryman among local Class 2A first-teamers are Hatton senior infielder Emma Latham and Red Bay sophomore infielder Lila Blackburn.
Joining Vaughn on the 1A first team are Mars Hill junior infielder Erika Mitchell, Belgreen sophomore pitcher Emma Dempsey and Belgreen senior infielder Camie Terrell.
Locals named second-team all-state include Muscle Shoals’ Madelyn Stonecipher (6A), Russellville’s Megan Warhurst (5A), Central’s Lauren Yates (4A), Hatton’s Cloey Lovelady and Mallory Lane and Tharptown’s Olivia Ergle and Shaylee Wieting (2A) and Mars Hill’s Kylie Thigpen and Faith Stanfield (1A).
Locals receiving honorable mention: Central’s Brianna Posey, Wilson’s Karlee Liverett and Rogers’ Savanna Henson (4A); Lexington’s Alyssa Brown and Lila Beth Turner and Colbert Heights’ Kinsley Milender (3A); Hatton’s Bradyn Mitchell (2A); and Covenant Christian’s Madalyn Scott and Ashlee Gann and Mars Hill’s Hannah Henry (1A).
